Stop. Look. Enjoy
Herein lies a million tiny moments
A story carved by millions of percise movements. I explore sculptures in stone and clay, to evoke lasting connections to nature in your home, yard, and in public spaces. Inspired by stone’s structure and clay’s malleability, my work highlights textures, colors, shadows, grains and glazes to create emotion in 3D sculptures, 2D reliefs, pottery, and slab ceramics.
Through simple bowl shaped forms - that provide a clean, restful shape revealing the stone’s hidden internal beauty; to elaborate, detailed, realistic or abstract, and mixed-media pieces using stone and clay, I’m curious about what I can make from stone and clay, and how people feel when they connect with my work.
There is a great pleasure that comes from the feel, the weight, and the look of stone. Clay is just maliable stone with its potential not yet realized. And glaze - all the flowing minerals of stone and clay waiting to be solidified.
Stone - Carved
Each sculpture starts with the stone’s unique traits—layering, veining, mineral coloration, guided by a spark from my own mind, or often from someone who approaches me with a stone and an idea they would like me to chip away at. I use traditional hand tools: hammers, chisels, rasps, files, and sandpaper, and use power tools like drills and grinders when needed, choosing each tool for the texture it creates. finishing pieces with polishing oils and waxes.
Clay - Shaped
The additive and subtractive nature of clay work is an often welcome respite for me; a change from the strictly subtractive process of stone scupture, where a false move can be a disaster.
Pottery - Thrown
Each pottery piece starts with an idea of form, function, or how a particular glaze may flow or cling to the surface.
