Formerly named “The Mountain Institute - Appalachia Program”, Experience Learning, located on Spruce Knob in Pendleton County, WV, is continuing its record of success educating youth and adults about the importance of the Appalachian Highlands as a well-source of fresh water for wildlife and the millions of people living downstream. With an emphasis on developing engaged, effective community members Experience Learning uses the WV DEP’s Save Our Streams protocols to teach participants about aquatic life and how to critically assess water quality for themselves. The native Eastern Hellbender, with its slimy, flappy skin and pinhead eyes is at the same time the creepiest and most charismatic river dweller in our waters. It is sensitive to pollution and thus considered an indicator species for water quality. This is a life-sized sculpture; the Hellbender is the largest salamander in North America.
